Why an average score of 7 can rate higher than a 9: The average score as displayed on the detail pages and below is only a rough guide to what people really think about a picture. Do you think it's right that a picture with 1 vote of 10 should rank above a picture with 20 votes of 9? Neither do we. That's why we handle rankings differently behind the scene than straight averaging.
